The mini mill steel production process begins in rather unassuming surroundings – the scrap yard. Unlike conventional integrated mills, which rely chiefly on coke and iron ore, Nucor uses 75-90% scrap steel as its “raw material.” Don’t be deceived by the humble origins, the process is far more sophisticated than most people imagine. The process begins with placing steel from our scrap yard into a charge bucket. Because each “heat” is custom-made, the composition of scrap in each charge bucket is quite precise. Loaders follow a specific recipe for each grade to ensure our customers receive exactly what they ordered. |
